Finding GED Sample Tests and Questions

There are many book and online sources offering GED practice tests and sample questions. If you want to take the most cost-effective route, consider online websites that have free self-administered tests. The place to find the most accurate and reliable information is on the official GED Testing Service website run by ACE (www.acenet.edu).

Before taking the GED practice test, it might be a good idea to review this official website so you know what to expect. You will find resources, including sample questions and answers, from each content area.

Language Arts, Writing
This section tests knowledge of grammar, mechanics and sentence structure. You will also be expected to write a timed essay about your opinion on a given topic.
Language Arts, Reading
The reading test assesses your ability to read and understand different texts and apply this knowledge to workplace and school settings.
Science
The science section covers the earth, space, physical and life sciences.
Social Studies
Here, you can expect questions about United States and world history, civics, government and geography.
Math
The math section has two parts that measure your knowledge of number operations, data analysis, geometry and algebra.

Online GED Practice Tests

Although no actual practice tests are available on the GED Testing Service website, you'll find links to recommended online sources offering free practice tests.

Literacy Link, an online program run by Kentucky Educational Television (KET), has a website (www.litlink.ket.org) offering ten practice tests covering one-half the questions of each content area. While not official practice tests, Literacy Link claims that the questions have been approved by the GED Testing Service. The tests are free but require registration and a login.

Steck Vaughn offers the official GED practice test (OPT) online (www. gedpractice.com). It is free and no registration is required. The questions are categorized by each content area and sub-area. Answers are provided for each question with feedback available for incorrect responses.

Additional Resources

More resources on mathematics help from GED Testing Service include links to a formulas page, a page with examples on using a calculator and a video explaining calculator operation. A link is also provided for additional help with the alternate format questions that comprise 20% of the mathematics test.
