GED Missouri: Learn About Missouri's GED Test

Make sure you're prepared for your future by earning a General Education Development (GED) credential. An increasing number of employers require candidates to hold high school diplomas or GEDs. Read on for an overview of Missouri's requirements for earning a GED.

The General Educational Development test consists of five exams that cover subjects usually taught in high school. Most colleges and employers accept GED certificates as being equivalent to high school diplomas. Each year, over 10,000 Missouri residents earn their GEDs.

Missouri GED Requirements:

Eligibility

According to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (MDESE), www.dese.mo.gov, the following requirements apply to all who wish to take the GED exam:

Must be at least 18 years of age or older (age requirements may vary, check with your local testing center for more details)
Must be a resident of Missouri
Must have withdrawn from high school over six months ago
Not a high school graduate

Exam Format

The exam consists of five different subject sections taken over hours:

Language Arts - Writing
- Comprised of a 45-minute essay composition'
Language Arts - Reading
Mathematics (Part 1 allows use of a calculator; Part 2 does not)
Science
Social Studies

Scoring

The score ranges from a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 800 on each subject section. The minimum required on each section is 410. The total minimum required for all subject sections is 2050. Retaking the entire test, or specific sections, is an option for individuals who fail to achieve a passing score on their first, or subsequent attempts.

Registration and Fees

To register for the exam, MDESE requires that individuals must complete the following:

Fill out the application, which is available for download at the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (MDESE), www.dese.mo.gov
Return it along with a $20.00 money order to: Treasurer State of Missouri, GED Office P.O. Box 480 Jefferson City, MO, 65102-0480
When the application is mailed back to you, register for the exam at your nearest testing center.
