GED Hawaii: Tips for Passing the Hawaii GED Test

According to the Hawaii Department of Education (HDE), doe.k12.hi.us, the General Educational Development (GED) Test provides a way to measure the educational achievement of non-high school graduates and comparing their academic competence to that of high school graduates.

Hawaii GED Requirements

Eligibility

In order to take Hawaii's GED exam you:

Must be 18 years of age or older
Must be a resident of Hawaii
Must have withdrawn from high school at least six months ago
Must not have already graduated

Exam Format

The exam consists of five different subject sections taken in 7.5 hours:

Language Arts - Writing
- 45 minute essay composition
Language Arts - Reading
- Multiple choice questions
Mathematics (use of a calculator is only permitted on Part 1, not on Part 2)
Science
Social Studies

Scoring

The score ranges from a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 800 on each subject section. The minimum required on each section is 410. The total minimum required for all subject sections is 2050. Individuals may retake the entire exam, or individual sections, until a satisfactory score is achieved.

Registration and Fees

Registration may be completed at any Hawaii official testing center. Check with the Hawaii Department of Education, doe.k12.hi.us, for a list of the testing sites in the state. There is a fee of $55 to take the exam (or $11 per section). Bring the required photo ID along with your social security number and proof of residence.

Preparation

Visit a library or bookstore or go online to check out the available GED practice materials. Another good way to prepare for the GED exam is to enroll in a GED preparation course offered by Hawaii community schools for adults.
