What Types Of Materials Can I Use For A 5th Grade Reading Assessment?
When you are assessing reading, you may want to consider using several different types of assessments in order to reach all of your students. Since all students learn and perform differently, a single type of assessment, such as a multiple choice test on a passage, may not accurately represent the abilities of all of your students. Fortunately, you have many options when choosing a 5th grade reading assessment.
Passages followed by multiple choice questions are one of the most common types of reading assessments and appear on many standardized tests. You can print reading comprehension passages with a subscription to Ed Helper or for free at EasyCBM.com. This site has PDF passages and multiple choice questions as well as an online system that allows you to input and analyze scores. You can print the assessments for free, but you need to complete the free registration in order to access the scoring system.
You can also use online tools from ReadWriteThink as an assessment resource. This site has free tools that students can use to analyze an outside text. Students can complete the activities, possibly over several days, and you can use the assessment as a project grade. Using many of these tools, like the Acrostic Poems would also count as a creative reading assessment.
If you have guided reading groups, you can use that time for informal reading assessments. On the chosen day, you can assess your students' fluency and comprehension while also conducting a lesson. This type of assessment is good for students who have test anxiety because they won't know they're being tested.
