Online Games and Educational Websites for 9-Year-Olds

Online games are a great way to help kids review because they are fun and engaging. The following sites have games and resources appropriate for your 9-year-old, if he or she needs extra help at home.

Find available tutors

The KidsKnowIt Network's Educational Resource

Here, you can find a links to games and activities for various subjects, including science, history, math and spelling. The KidsKnowIt Network also provides educational tools like music, podcasts and movies. The activities on the site are organized by topic rather than age or grade level, so you need to know what your 9-year-old is currently studying in school in order to choose the appropriate resources.

The site also has customizable features. For example, the spelling games section of the site allows you to create a custom spelling list or use one of over 1,000 available lists. The words from your selected list will then be loaded into each of the spelling games she chooses to play on the site.

Scholastic's Games and Videos

Scholastic's page called The Stacks is specifically designed for kids between ages 8-12. In the books section, your child can browse through popular book series. Some books include summaries, excerpts and games that coincide with the storyline. Because you can browse by genre, this section will be especially helpful if your child struggles to find stories that interest him.

The games section features activities and games that increase reading and writing skills. Additionally, because many of the games are paired with a novel, they can support comprehension as well. 'Create a Tale,' for instance, is a writing game that complements A Dog's Life by Ann M. Martin. Kids create their own story by selecting the setting, characters, objects and text bubbles. Finally, in the videos section, there are book trailers, author interviews and previews for movie versions of books.

Games from Funbrain

Here, you can find games for 9-year-olds that cover topics like multiplication, grammar usage and vocabulary. You can select your child's grade to find the appropriate games or search through these games based on what skill she needs to develop. For instance, the game called '2Bee or Nottoobee' helps students with verb conjugation. Similarly, 'Scramble-Saurus' is a vocabulary game available for animal, rainforest and health terms. This site is also a helpful resource because of its unconventional games, like 'The Piano Player,' which helps kids read music.
