Reading Assessment
Will My Child Take A Reading Assessment In Kindergarten?
You may not expect your child to take a reading assessment as early as kindergarten, but teachers use early reading assessments to determine what skills children have. They use this information to design customized lessons for children and schedule reading interventions, if necessary.
On a reading assessment for kindergarten, your child will usually be asked to identify letters of the alphabet and make the sound that the letter represents. They may be asked to identify rhyming words and clap the number of syllables in a word. Teachers will also assess students' phonemic awareness, which is the ability to hear sounds in in words. During these assessments, teachers will say a word and ask students to name the sounds they hear.
You can prepare your child for a reading assessment in kindergarten by supporting early literacy in your home. Read 'Early Literacy' for ideas on how you can help your young child learn to read.
