Study Skills for Elementary Students
How Can I Teach Study Skills For Elementary Students?
When students are in elementary school, they may not have very strong study skills. As an elementary teacher, you may want to incorporate study skills instruction into your classroom so your students are prepared for the high expectations of middle school.
Note taking is a very important study skill that students often develop gradually. You can teach your students strong note taking skills by providing them with note taking templates. For example, if you're teaching a lesson about the solar system, provide them with an outline of the unit. The outline should have blank spots for them to fill in information. As they learn new things about the solar system, they can complete their outline.
You can also use this technique when teaching your students how to make study guides for tests. Instead of expecting them to make their own study guide, provide them with a list of questions of vocabulary words and encourage them to fill out the study guides with their parents.
You can also teach your students good study habits by assigning steady, manageable homework. When elementary students know they will have a math sheet for homework every night, for example, they will learn how to budget their time. Many elementary also assign daily reading.
