Math Algorithms for Elementary Students
What Are Common Math Algorithms For Elementary Students?
Algorithms are a fancy word for the process used to solve a math problem. Every time elementary students learn how to complete a math operation, they learn an algorithm that helps them solve it. For example, when the process of solving a long division problem is a math algorithm. Your child will probably learn the following math algorithms for elementary students.
- The addition algorithm shows students how to carry.
- The subtraction algorithm shows students how to borrow.
- The multiplication algorithm shows students how to solve long multiplication.
- The division algorithm shows students how to complete long division.
- Algorithms for fractions show kids how to reduce fractions.
In many elementary schools, teachers use different algorithms than what you may have learned as a child. For example, many schools teach long division using the partial sum algorithms. If the methods your child uses to solve problems look unfamiliar to you, you may want to meet with his or her teacher to learn about the algorithm.
