Open Ended Math Problems
Why Should My Child Practice Open Ended Math Problems?
Open ended math problems are any math problem that does not have answer choices, and your child should practice open ended math problems for several reasons.
First of all, on most math tests your child will take in school will have open ended math problems. On these tests, teachers usually give partial credit if the student got the wrong answer but showed work. So, when your child practices open ended math problems, he or she should make sure to show all work.
Second of all, many standardized tests have started including open ended math problems in the math sections of their tests. Although your child still needs to know how to answer multiple choice problems, he or she may see open ended problems on tests as well. In addition to many state tests, the SAT includes both multiple choice and open ended problem in the math section.
Practicing open ended math problems can even help your child do better on multiple choice tests. If your child can solve a problem without even looking at the answer choices, he or she will probably get through the test more quickly and will be less distracted by misleading answer choices.
