Help with Mix Fraction Divisions and Measurements

How Can I Help My Child With Mixed Fraction Divisions and Measurements?

Basic fractions are fairly easy for kids to visualize because they are easy to model. Kids who do well with beginning fractions, though, often struggle with more advanced mixed fraction divisions and measurements.

You can help your child with mixed fraction division by giving him or her a mini-lesson on the concept. When dividing mixed numbers, kids need to first turn the mixed numbers into improper fractions. Then they change the problem into a multiplication problem and multiply the dividend by the divisor. For example when you want to divide, 4 3/4 divided by 2 1/2, first change the numbers to improper fractions, or 19/4 divided by 5/2. Then multiply by the reciprocal, or 19/4 times 2/5 for a final answer of 38/20. You can then reduce the fraction and turn it back into a mixed number.

You can help your child with fraction measurements by showing him or her how to use the divisions on a ruler. Each tick mark represents a different fraction of the inch. Let your child practice by measuring lengths around the house.
