GED Massachusetts: How to Earn Your Massachusetts GED Diploma

Massachusetts GED Requirements

Eligibility

According to the Massachusetts Department of Education (MDE), www.doe.mass.edu, individuals must meet the following requirements in order to take the GED exam:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older (age requirements may vary, check with your local testing center for more details)
  • Must be a resident of Massachusetts
  • Must have withdrawn from high school program for six months or longer
  • Not a high school graduate

Exam Format

The exam consists of five different subject sections taken over seven and a half hours:

  • Language Arts - Writing
    • 45 minute essay question
  • Language Arts - Reading
  • Mathematics (Parts 1 and 2)
    • Using a calculator is limited to Part 1 of the Mathematics exam. No calculators will be allowed during Part 2
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Scoring

The score ranges from a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 800 on each subject section. The minimum required on each section is 410. The total minimum required for all subject sections is 2050. Each section, as well as the entire exam, can be retaken until passing scores are earned.

Registration and Fees

Registration must be completed at any Massachusetts official testing center. Contact the MDE, www.doe.mass.edu, for a list of qualified testing sites in the state of Massachusetts. There is a fee of $65 to take the exam (retakes are $15 per section). Bring sufficient photo ID along with social security number and proof of residency.

Preparation

Visit a library or bookstore to check out available GED practice materials. Inquire at your community colleges or adult learning centers for information about GED prep courses.
