Things to Strengthen First Grade Reading Skills
What Are Some Things To Strengthen First Grade Reading Skills?
Kids often become readers in first grade. Although preschool and kindergarten teachers also teach reading, reading often clicks for kids in first grade. In order for reading to click, kids need a lot of practice both at home and in school. The following things to strengthen first grade reading skills can be done at home.
- Read frequently with your child and give him or her many opportunities for independent reading. Go to the library or book store and select easy reader books, which are appropriate for first grade readers because they use a limited vocabulary. You can strengthen your child's reading comprehension skills by reading more advanced texts to him or her out loud. Read 'Choosing Books For Elementary Kids'.
- Teach your child sight words. Although phonics can help your child sound out unfamiliar words, he or she should have several common words, like 'the' and 'you' memorized. Knowing these words can help kids read more texts.
- Practice reading when you're out and about. Let your child read signs on the road and in stores. Any reading, even if it's not from a book, can strengthen skills.
