How Can My Child Prepare For TAKS Reading?

The TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) test is administered to all students in Texas, beginning in third grade. Students take a reading test each year and are expected answer multiple choice questions based on short passages. Your child's teacher will prepare him or her for the TAKS reading test, but you may want to help your child prepare at home.

On the TAKS, students who have strong fluency and comprehension skills often achieve good scores. You can help your child improve reading fluency and comprehension by encouraging him or her to read frequently for pleasure. Set aside thirty minutes each evening for reading. You may want to sit with your child and either read out loud or read separate books silently. At the end of the half hour, you and your child can discuss the book. Ask your child to recall details about characters, plot and setting.

Your child can also complete reading comprehension worksheets while preparing for the TAKS. RHL School has dozens of reading comprehension worksheets. Your child can complete a couple of worksheets a week for consistent practice.

Shortly before the TAKS, your child can complete a practice test, which is available from the Texas Education Agency. You can make the practice test more authentic by duplicating the test environment in your home. Give your child a quiet, clean workspace and an uninterrupted block of time. By taking a practice test, your child will know what to expect on TAKS day and will be able to do his or her best.
