Reading Strategies Fifth Grade

What Are Three Reading Strategies For Fifth Grade?

By the time students are in fifth grade, most are reading fluently but need to continue working on their comprehension, analysis and vocabulary. The following reading strategies for fifth grade can help your students read texts more deeply and with greater understanding.

  • If a novel has two or more strong characters, have students complete a Venn diagram while reading. This Venn diagram can serve as their notes on the novel and help them think more deeply about characters' actions.
  • In order to promote discussion about a novel, hold a literature circle in your classroom. Have students take notes and jot down question while reading a text and then host a discussion. Teach your students how to respond to other students comments and how to support their comments with details from the text. You can find out more about fifth grade literature circles from LitCircles.org.
  • One way that students can improve their reading comprehension is to increase their vocabulary. While your fifth graders are reading a novel, ask them to pick out challenging vocabulary words. Alternatively, you can select words for your students. Then ask them to complete a vocabulary word map for each word.
