Number Model 5th Grade
Will My Child Use A Number Model In 5th Grade?
A number model is any visual aid that shows kids how a number can be quantified. Kids use number models in primary grades frequently. For example, your child may have learned counting by counting pictures of objects, which is a number model. When your child reaches 5th grade, you may not think he or she still needs to use a number model, but number models can help 5th graders conceptualize complex concepts like fractions, percents and decimals.
A number model in 5th grade will probably consist of a number strip that shows fractions or percents. Your child may use a number of strips when learning about equivalent fractions. He or she will take the same strip and divide into different units. For example, one strip might be divided into fourths and the other one into eighths. He or she can lay the strips side by side to see how 1/4 is equivalent to 2/8. Children also use fraction strips to understand how fractions are part of a whole and when learning percents.
