Math Lessons for Adding and Subtracting Negative Numbers
When I'm Teaching Math Lessons For Adding And Subtracting Negative Numbers, What Tool Will Most Help My Students?
Negative numbers can be challenging for students to work with because they are opposite positive numbers. Students who easily recognize that eight is bigger than five may struggle to understand why negative eight is smaller than negative five. When students are adding and subtracting negative numbers, they may be unsure about the answer. When you're teaching math lessons in adding and subtracting negative numbers, a number line will help them complete the problems more easily.
You can make a number line by drawing a straight line across a sheet of paper. Use tick marks to mark off even intervals. Label the center tick mark 'zero' and label all the other tick marks by units of one. When your students have to solve an addition or subtraction problem with negative numbers, they can count tick marks on the number line. After repeated practice, they will find that they can do many of the problems in their head. Your students can also use the free online number line activities provided by the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives.
