How to Teach Fractions
Can You Tell Me How To Teach Fractions?
Fractions can be difficult for children because most kids are only experienced with whole numbers. When you're teaching fractions, begin the unit with visual activities that will help kids understand what fractions look like. You can model fractions on the board or let your students draw circles, squares and rectangles and then divide them into fractions. You could even have a pizza party and let your students practice cutting the pizzas into eighths.
Once your students understand the concept of fractions, teach them about fractions with common denominators. They should learn how to compare fractions and add and subtract them. Give them lots of practice so that they internalize the operations. If your students are doing well with this unit, you can then introduce equivalent fractions. This concept can be difficult, but using fraction strips, which are a visual aid, can help. Make your own fraction strips or download them from the Internet.
