Elementary Level Writing Sentences

What Activities Can I Use To Teach Kids At The Elementary Level About Writing Sentences?

When you're teaching kids at the elementary level about writing sentences, you should begin with simple sentences that have a subject, verb and object. Practicing how to write basic sentences could be boring if you make students drill with worksheets, but these activities make lessons on writing sentences fun.

  • Make a noun bag and a verb bag. When students get more advanced, you can add an adjective bag. Put slips of paper in each bag that have examples from that part of speech written on them. Let your students pick two nouns from the noun bag and one verb from the verb bag. They can then put their words in order to make a sentence. Remind them that they may need to change the form of the verb. Encourage them to write their sentence down and read it out loud.
  • Many students have trouble thinking of sentences to write and could sit for an entire lesson staring at a blank sheet of paper. You can help them break their writer's block by giving simple pictures and asking them to write one or two sentences describing what they see. If students still struggle, ask them to describe the pictures out loud first.
