5th Grade Fraction Problems

Do Students Have To Use Equivalent Fractions When Solving 5th Grade Fraction Problems?

Students will probably have to use equivalent fractions to solve 5th grade fraction problems because many 5th grade fraction problems use uncommon denominators. When students are working with uncommon denominators, they need to find equivalent fractions that have common denominators in order to solve the problem.

For example, 5th graders often learn how to complete fraction addition with uncommon denominators. In order to solve a problem like 3/4+5/6, kids must make an addition problem with a common denominator. First, they should recognize that four and six are both factors of twelve. They can find equivalent fractions with a denominator of twelve. Multiply 3/4 by 3/3, which is a form of writing the number one. Multiply 5/6 by 2/2. Your new addition problem is 9/12+10/12. Simply add the numerators to find the sum.
