Preparation Guide for the 4th Grade Math Test

Know What's Tested

One of the best things you can do to help your children prepare for their 4th grade math exams is to find out what skills will be tested. When you know what will be covered, you can create a better game plan to prepare your children for the challenge. You can usually get information about your school's 4th grade math curriculum on the district website or the website for the state education department. In 4th grade, students are typically tested in the following five areas:

  • Operations & Algebraic Thinking, which includes multiplication, division and problem-solving skills.
  • Number & Operations in Base Ten, which involves working with multi-digit whole numbers and understanding place values.
  • Number & Operations - Fractions, which deals with fraction equivalence, building fractions and using decimal notation for fractions.
  • Measurement & Data, in which students calculate perimeter and area, convert measurements to different units and work with angles and line plots.
  • Geometry, where students classify shapes by identifying their line and angle properties.

Stay on Top of School Work

You can help your children prepare for their 4th grade math tests by staying on top of the work they do in school. The assignments students must complete in class and for homework are generally given to help them retain what they've learned. By making sure your children are completing this work properly and on time, you'll help them learn and remember the skills they need to know for their tests.

Since many teachers don't have time to review previously learned material with students in class, it's also a good idea to do this at home. Each week, you can pull out a few old assignments or tests and quiz your child on the contents.

Utilize Tutoring Sessions

Another way 4th graders can prepare for their math tests is to attend tutoring sessions. Most math teachers will offer tutoring to their students in the mornings or after school. In addition, special math tutoring services may be offered during or after school. You may also want to find a private math tutor who can meet with your child at your home.
