Third Grade Reading Lesson Plans

What Are Some Third Grade Reading Lesson Plans I Can Use To Teach Vocabulary In Context?

Being able to figure out the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary from the context of a passage is an important skill. As beginning readers, kids read simple texts that use a very limited vocabulary. By third grade, though, many kids can read texts that might be sprinkled with more advanced vocabulary words. When kids stumble over an unfamiliar word, they might have trouble comprehending the text as a whole. Help them by teaching third grade reading lesson plans that show them how to figure out vocabulary in context.

  • Write simple sentences. Replace one of the words in the sentence with a nonsense word. For example, you could write, 'Birds lay xxxx in a nest'. Kids have to use context clues to figure out that the nonsense word means eggs.
  • Take a picture walk with students before beginning a new text. Give students time to look at all the pictures in the book and think about what might be happening. After the picture walk, read the story together. Let students use the pictures to help them comprehend any text that uses challenging vocabulary. This activity shows kids how to use visuals as an aid when reading.
