Teaching Writing
What Are Three Activities I Can Use When Teaching Writing To Elementary Students?
It's important that elementary students work on writing on a regular basis. The learning standards for your school probably outline the type of writing skills you should teach your students. The three activities listed below will satisfy the writing learning standards at most elementary schools.
- When you're teaching voice to your students, ask them to write a paragraph told from the point of view of an object in the classroom. For example, they can write an essay from the point of view of the pencil sharpener. They should think about how the sharpener would feel as it sharpens pencils. They can also consider how the classroom objects feel about watching students every day.
- When you're teaching about word choice and descriptive language, give them a taste test of chocolate or other food item. As a class, come up with adjectives that describe the food. Ask students to choose very specific adjectives. For example, delicious could describe any food while sweet only describes food that has sugar or another sweetner in it.
- Turn your students into journalists when you're teaching writing. Show them how to interview their peers and ask them to write an article describing the life of one of their classmates. You can use your word processor to turn their articles into a classroom magazine.
