What Are Two Fun Second Grade Lesson Plans For Counting Money?
Learning how to count money can be a lot of fun because the topic lends itself to hands-on lessons. Kids are often introduced to counting money in first grade but go more in-depth into the topic as second graders. After teaching your students the basics of counting money, you should teach several second grade lesson plans that let students engage in the money.
- Teach students about budgeting and counting money by dividing students into groups and giving each group a sum of play money. Give each several objects that are labeled with prices. Students need to count their play money to figure out which of the objects they would be able to afford if they were really shopping.
- Make cards that have pictures of coins and bills on each card. Each card should have a different sum of money expressed through a different combination of coins and bills. Let students practice counting up the sums for the first part of the lesson. Then divide them into pairs and let them play a version of the card game War. Each students turns over one money card. The student who had the card with the larger sum gets to keep both cards. The student with the most cards at the end of the lesson wins.
