Math Story Problems
Why Does My Child Have To Solve Math Story Problems?
Math story problems, which are also called word problems, appear on most math tests. Many children struggle with these types of problems, but it could be argued that solving math story problems is the most essential skill kids will learn in their years of math education. Although most children will not enter mathematics fields, all adults have to use math in their everyday lives. When children solve math story problems, they practice applying math skills to real life situations. Because math story problems are so important, they appear on most standardized tests, including college entrance exams.
Your child will be given many opportunities to practice math story problems in school, but if you would like your child to spend a little extra time working on story problems, you can print worksheets from the Internet. Math.About.com has word problem worksheets for grades one through eight. You can find additional word problems at Dads Worksheets.
You and your child can even work on word problems together by completing the word problem challenges from FigureThis.org. This site is supported by NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) and mostly uses middle school math skills.
