How Should I Solve A Math Story Problem?
Every math story problem is different, but you can use the same steps each time to help you solve them successfully.
Begin by reading the problem through. Look for the important numbers and underline this information. You may also want to underline what the problem is asking you to do.
Once you know what the story problem is asking you for, you need to figure out what operation or operations to use. Look for key words in the story problem. For example, the word 'difference' usually tells you to use subtraction. If the problem is talking about groupings, like groups of items in boxes, you probably need to use multiplication or division.
Once you've completed the math problem, check your work! Many students get problems wrong because they've made careless mistakes. You should also double check that you've actually answered the problem. For example, if a story problem is asking you for the remainder of a long division problem and you simply give the quotient, you may lose points.
