Where Can My Child Get Math Help?
If your child is struggling in math, he or she should seek help right away. Math is a cumulative subject, which means that each new concept students learn will be used in later units. If your child struggles with fractions, for example, he or she will also struggle with decimals, percents, proportions, probability and other topics. Fortunately, there are many ways your child can get math help.
Have a discussion with your child's teacher to make a plan for your child. Some teachers are available to meet before or after school with struggling students or can suggest other community resources. Ask if your child's school has a math lab or offers free tutoring.
You can also hire a tutor. Tutors can be very helpful because they individualize instruction to your child's needs. They can, however, be expensive. Before hiring a tutor, you may want to try tutoring yourself. Read 'DIY: Parents as Tutors' for tips on how to tutor your own child.
