Help with a Math Word Problem
How Can I Give My Child Help With A Math Word Problem?
Math word problems are challenging for many children because they have to choose the relevant information from the problem and then decide what operation to do. You can help your child choose the relevant information by encouraging him or her to underline the numbers. By underlining the key information, you child will clearly see the numbers that are important.
You can help your child figure out what operation to use by helping him or her visualize the math problem. If the numbers are small enough, you child can draw a picture. For example, if a word problem says there are six cookies in a box and three boxes, your child can draw a picture and then count. Once your child knows the answer, you can ask him or her what kind of operation would have reached the correct answer. Once your child has drawn pictures for several math problems, it will become easier for him or her to visualize it in his or her head.
