Fractions for 4th Grade
What Will My Child Learn About Fractions In 4th Grade?
Fractions for 4th grade are fairly straightforward because the unit is usually just an introduction to the concept. Your child will learn the definition of fractions and complete several activities designed to help him or her visualize fractions. These activities are called modeling activities and usually involve kids drawing shapes, dividing them into equal parts and shading fractional amounts.
After the unit introduction, your child may learn how to compare fractions with a common denominator by looking at the numerator. He or she may also learn basic fraction addition.
If your child is in advanced math class, he or she may be introduced to fractions with uncommon denominators in 4th grade. Otherwise, he or she will learn about uncommon denominators in 5th grade. Fractions are going to be taught in your child's math classes for the next few year. If he or she is struggling with 4th grade fractions, you may want to give him or her a little help so he or she doesn't fall behind.
