First Grade Reading Lessons
What Are Three Effective Techniques I Can Use During First Grade Reading Lessons?
As a first grade teacher, you probably teach reading every day. Although you want to teach a variety of lessons that practice different skills, you can use similar techniques time and time again.
- When introducing your students to a new book, take them on a picture walk. Discuss each illustration and ask students to predict what might be happening. The picture walk will help students comprehend the text and teach them how to use pictures to gather information.
- Before practicing a new phonics sound, teach a mini-lesson about the sound to the class. This lesson should last five to ten minutes and be followed by targeted practice. By teaching a mini-lesson, you are ensuring that your students receive direct instruction in all sounds and letters.
- Use hands-on tools to let students engage in reading lessons. You may want to invest in magnetic letters, which students can place on board to construct words. This technique can help your struggling readers practice phonemic awareness.
