How Can I Help My Child Prepare For Elementary Spelling Tests?
Most elementary school teachers give weekly spelling tests to students. At the beginning of the week, kids may take a pre-test; they will then have the entire week to prepare for the post-test on Friday. If your child's teacher does not give a pre-test, you may want to give him or her a pre-test at home. Spend most of the week studying the words that your child got wrong on the pre-test.
Sit with your child and go over each challenging word. Encourage him or her to think of memory tricks for remember each word. For example, children can remember how to spell 'color' by thinking of the two 'o's as eyes and the 'l' as a nose.
After going over each tough word, have your child write the words several times each day. On the night before the post-test, give your child another test on the words and go over the words he or she is still missing.
