How to Find a Tutor for a Student with a Learning Disability

Students struggling with learning disabilities often benefit from the instruction of an experienced tutor. This article suggests questions to ask when interviewing potential instructors.

Find available tutors

Whether your special needs child is enrolled in standard classes or classes specifically designed for children with learning disabilities, he or she may benefit from the extra assistance a tutor can provide.

Know What to Ask!

Linda Broatch of Schwab Learning, www.schwablearning.org, suggests that a parent consider the following questions before scheduling interviews with tutors:

1. What will be expected of the tutor?
Include types of skills and tasks that you want your child to learn and complete.

2. What information about my child could help the tutor?
Include behavioral traits and academic skills.

3. How will the tutor incorporate the curriculum my child is accustomed to in his or her classroom?
Consider acting as link between tutor and teacher.

Finding a tutor for a child with special needs may require a bit more effort. Consider the tutor's temperament and ability to handle stressful situations. Finally, speak with other parents who have disabled children. And most importantly, don't forget to speak with your child. He or she needs to feel comfortable with a tutor, and he or she should be involved in the hiring process.
