GED Oregon: Learn About the Oregon GED Exam

Hundreds of Oregon residents are earning their General Education Development (GED) credential each year. These individuals are better prepared to enter today's competitive workforce. The following article will review the state's requirements for attaining a GED.

Oregon GED Requirements:

Eligibility

Individuals must meet the following requirements in order to take the GED exam, www.adultliteracy.org:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older (age requirements may vary, check with your local testing center for more details)
  • Must be a resident of Oregon
  • Must have withdrawn from a regular high school program for at least six months
  • Not a high school graduate

Exam Format

The exam consists of five different subject sections taken over seven and a half hours:

  • Language Arts - Writing
    • A 45 minute essay question.
  • Language Arts - Reading
  • Mathematics (Part 1 and 2)
    • A calculator may be used on Part 1 only.
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Scoring

The score ranges from a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 800 on each subject section. The minimum required on each section is 410. The total minimum required for all subject sections is 2050. Individuals may retake all or part of the exam until a passing score is achieved.

Registration and Fees

Registration must be completed at any Oregon official testing center. Fees vary by testing center. Check with your local center for more details. Bring sufficient ID with your social security number and proof of residence. Contact the Oregon Department of Community Colleges and Workforce Development, www.oregon.gov/CCWD, for testing center locations and for other registration information.

Preparation

Visit your local library or bookstore to view the available GED practice materials. Inquire at your local community college or adult learning center for information about GED prep courses.
