GED Indiana: Learn the Indiana GED Requirements

Be prepared to enter today's workforce by earning your General Education Development (GED) certificate. This article will present the requirements to earning your GED in Indiana.

The GED exam offers adults who left school prior to graduating an opportunity to earn a high school diploma credential. Individuals must demonstrate sufficient abilities (12th grade competencies that would have been acquired in a 4-year high school education) in a battery of tests covering 5 major subject areas.

Indiana GED Requirements:

Eligibility

According to the Indiana Department of Education, www.doe.state.in.us, Individuals must meet the following requirements in order to take the GED exam:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older
  • Must be a resident of Indiana
  • Must have withdrawn from a regular high school program for at least six months
  • Not a high school graduate

Exam Format

The exam consists of five different subject sections taken over seven and a half hours:

  • Language Arts - Writing
    • A 45 minute essay question
  • Language Arts - Reading
  • Mathematics (Part 1 and 2)
    • Use of a calculator is limited to Part 1 of the mathematics exam. No calculators will be allowed on Part 2.
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Scoring

The score ranges from a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 800 on each subject section. The minimum required on each section is 410. The total minimum required for all subject sections is 2050. The exam and all of its sections can be retaken as necessary until a satisfactory grade is achieved.

Registration and Fees

Registration must be completed at any Indiana official testing center. The Indiana Department of Education, www.doe.state.in.us, can provide a list of testing sites along with any other information you require. There is a fee of $60 to take the exam. Remember to bring your social security number, proof of residency, and any necessary photo ID to the testing site.

Preparation

Visit your local library or bookstore to view the available GED practice materials. Inquire at your local community college or adult learning center about GED prep courses.
