How Should I Structure 5th Grade Lesson Plans For Math?
The way you structure lesson plans can have a big impact on students' performance. If you don't structure a lesson well, students may become confused and distracted. A quality 5th grade lesson plan for math often follows the following progression.
- Begin with a review of material previously learned. You can give students a couple practice problems or a short quiz.
- Introduce the new topic with an introductory activity. This activity should somehow connect the new information with something that the students already know.
- Teach a brief lesson about how to use the math skill.
- Provide guided practice in which students complete practice problems with your assistance.
- Give students time for independent in-class practice. During this time, walk around the classroom and spot-check for comprehension problems.
- Assign twenty to thirty minutes of homework to make sure your students understand and retain the new skill.
