3rd Grade Reading Achievement Tests and Sample Tests

In many states, 3rd graders take reading achievement tests at some point in the school year, if not several. Although the tests differ a bit from state to state, most reading achievement tests have short passages followed by multiple-choice or short answer questions. Your child can prepare for 3rd grade reading achievement tests by reading frequently and working with texts. The following websites may also be helpful.

For a number of reading practice exams, look no further than easyCBM.com. This website is a learning resource provided by the National Reading Panel. It was created by University of Oregon researchers and is designed to provide users with a full range of assessment tools. Although you have to sign up to access the tests, it doesn't cost anything and you can tour the site with a 'demo account' first to make sure that easyCBM.com offers what you and your child are looking for. Once you've signed up, you can download and print the reading comprehension exams tests and administer them to your child.

The Texas Education Agency's Standardized Tests

You can check your state's board of education to see if sample reading achievement tests are available. Because standardized tests usually based on similar education standards around the country, you can also look for released exams from other states. The Texas Education Agency's website is a solid resource for released reading tests and answer keys. You can either view the 2009 Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills in your browser or download and print it. The Texas Education Agency also provides TAKS study guides.

ReadWriteThink's website offers English/language arts learning resource, including lesson plans, teaching strategies games and learning activities. When your 3rd grader is preparing for a reading assessment test, the 'student interactives' from ReadWriteThink can be very useful. Many cover 3rd grade reading tests topics like comparing and contrasting, idioms, word families, story structures and more.
